 IMPORTANT!  MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Back in 1997, the State informed local civic organizations that it had plans to sell off parts of the Creedmoor Campus.

The civic organizations, along with then Borough President Claire Shulman, in an effort, to preserve the character of the neighboring areas, came out, in June 1999, with the Creedmoor Master Plan, which outlined how any property sold should be developed. Over the years, three projects, the Country Pointe houses, the Father Reder senior apartments and the Bernard Fineson Center, all followed the guidelines set forth in the plan.

Back in 2008, two parcels of the Creedmoor Campus were sold to The Indian Community and Cultural Center, Inc. who said that they wanted to build a “15,000 sq. ft. community center, a multi-use athletic field and a 100 space above-ground parking lot” which we supported. These parcels are located directly adjacent to all of the homes on the west side of 242nd Street from Union Turnpike to 82nd Ave. This organization, in May, 2011, met with area civic leaders, myself included, and asked us to endorse an idea “ in the planning stages” for senior assisted-living housing on this same property. When I asked for the scope of the project, their representatives were evasive. Since they would not give me this information, I rejected their request for my support for this project.

On June 8th, I was informed by Community Board 13Q that the organization had filed plans for the construction of two nine-story buildings, in April, 2011, with the Buildings Department, which were rejected because the property is currently zoned C8-1 which prohibits any residential use. On June 6th, they applied for a zoning variance, #78-11 BZ, with your department. We were lied to.

At our last regular meeting, I introduced a resolution to oppose any development contrary to the Creedmoor Master Plan. The resolution was passed unanimously. While we welcome senior housing, we oppose any development that does not fit the one and two-story character of our neighborhood. The ICCC has portrayed us as being against senior housing. The truth is, that several years ago, we and former Senator Frank Padavan helped Catholic Charities obtain a site on the Creedmoor campus for what is now the Father Reder Senior Apartments. Our civic would welcome and support a senior development as long as it is one or two stories.

Therefore, I urge you to contact our elected officials and let them know how you feel. Your officials are NYS Senator Tony Avella, NYS Assemblymember David Weprin (north of Hillside Ave.), NYS Assemblymember Barbara Clark (south of Hillside Ave.) and NYC Councilman Mark Weprin.

The Board of Standards and Appeals has recently placed an indefinite hold on the ICCC's Variance request.

Sincerely, Jerry Wind, President

The NYS Assembly district lines are scheduled to be re-drawn. Our civic, along with our neighboring civics wish to be represented by one assemblyperson not three, as we are now. We have a rally scheduled for Thursday, January 12th, 7PM at the Queens High School of Teaching, 74-50 Commonwealth Blvd. Please tell a friend.

A vote on the variance request by the ICCC to build two nine story buildings on the Creedmoor Campus took place at the October 24th regular meeting of Community Board 13. A resolution was passed 22-1 to oppose the request.

The law banning smoking within New York City’s parks, beaches, and pedestrian plazas goes into effect and smoking is now prohibited on Parks property.
You’ll note that smoking will still be allowed on sidewalks outside parks, including the sidewalks that form the perimeter of parks and in the parking lots of all Parks properties. We expect that the new law will be enforced mostly by New Yorkers themselves, who will ask people to follow the law and stop smoking. However, people who violate the new law could receive a $50 ticket.
Due to the efforts of Senator Frank Padavan and our local civics, our neighborhood has been recertified as a cease-and desist zone in order to prevent real estate agents from soliciting your home to place it for sale. Those individuals who wish to be placed on the cease-and-desist list must fill out a form which is located on-line at the Dept. of State website, www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/cdform.asp or can phone the Division of Licensing Services at 212-417-5747.

Senator Frank Padavan recently suffered a minor stroke. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery. We wish him him well.

There has been an increase in home burglaries in our area. The NYPD  advises to leave lights on in your home when you're away. Have a neighbor pick up any circulars on your porch or lawn. It is also a good idea to leave porch lights on. Never leave valuables in your car or leave it running unattended. When putting out empty boxes, flatten them and turn them inside out so that you will not advertise that new major appliance to prospective thieves. Report suspicious activity, in progress, by phoning 911.

On Wed., 11/18/09, The Department of Health launched the NYC FluLine. By calling 311, operators will provide New Yorkers with information on what to do if they or a family member feels sick with flu-like symptons. They will be connected to registered nurses who will provide info on whether or not to see a doctor. When necessary, on-call nurses will refer people to clinics, facilitating timely treatment while preventing unnecessary visits to emergency departments.
